Background:
Senator Ashby was first elected to the Senate in 2022, previously serving as a City Councilmember in Sacramento. While on the Sacramento City Council, she supported police reforms that centered around increased usage of body cameras, but also supported the creation of a local police oversight commission.
During her first year in office, Senator Ashby earned an “A” on the IJ Action Scorecard, but has earned a “C” for the last two years, only voting to support IJ Action supported justice reform bills about half of the time. Notably, in July 2024, she led a failed legislative effort to fast-track a measure on the November 2024 ballot that would have repealed parts of Prop 47 and increased criminal penalties for shoplifters.
Public Safety Platform:
While campaigning for Senate in 2022, Ashby touted her work to provide formerly incarcerated people with wraparound reentry services, and stated a commitment to working with CDCR to focus on rehabilitation in an interview with the Sacramento Bee. Her current campaign website reflects the same public safety accomplishments as her 2022 run.
Although Ashby expresses a support for reform on her campaign website, her voting record reveals that she abandoned justice reform shortly into her first term in office. Additionally, her efforts in 2024 to qualify a measure for the ballot to repeal parts of Prop 47 and her significant financial support from law enforcement reveal that she does not align with IJ Action’s values and we therefore cannot make a recommendation in this race.
