2026 State Senate

ABOUT THE STATE SENATE

The California State Senate is the upper house of the two legislative houses for the State of California. Senators are responsible for introducing and voting on state legislation and also vote to approve the state’s budget each year. State Senators are responsible for confirming or rejecting the Governor’s appointments to state agencies such as the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR), and are also responsible for carrying out state agency casework for the people who live in their districts.

The Senate has a membership of 40 Senators elected for 4-year terms, 20 to begin every 2 years. A person may serve no more than 12 years in the Senate, Assembly, or both, in any combination of terms. Members of the Senate representing odd-numbered districts will have elections during the presidential election years. Members representing even-numbered districts will have elections at the same time as California’s constitutional officers. That is why this election, we are only voting for the Senators representing even-numbered districts.
