Background:
Senator Archuleta has served in the Legislature since 2018 and has generally not been a supporter of justice reform. He earned a “C” on our Legislative Scorecard in 2023, a “D” in 2024, and an “F” this year, consistently voting against good reform bills while voting to support bills that increase criminalization.
Additionally, he authored a few bills that would increase criminalization, namely: SB 537, a bill that failed but would have reversed recent parole reforms and require a return to state prison (instead of county jail) for people convicted of murder for any parole violation; and SB 923, a bill that also failed but would have drastically expanded the definition for shoplifting and increased jail time for the offense
