Eleni Kounalakis
- Political Party:
Democrat
- Ballot Designation:
Lieutenant Governor of California
- Law Enforcement Contributions:
- California Statewide Law Enforcement Association PAC
- Background:
Eleni Kounalakis was elected as the first woman Lt. Governor of California in 2018. She previously served as the US Ambassador to Hungary under President Obama, and prior to that, ran a housing development firm owned by her father in Sacramento.
As the termed-out Lt. Governor, she initially launched a campaign for Governor, which she abandoned to run for Treasurer instead.
- Public Safety Platform:
Lt. Governor Kounalakis does not share her views on justice reform issues on her campaign website and generally does not discuss this topic on her social media pages. At the Los Angeles World Affairs Council Town Hall in April 2022, she was directly asked about her views on public safety, and she stated that she believes police are necessary to “enforce rule of law” but believes that reforms are also necessary to prevent police violence.
For the most part, her advocacy as Lt. Governor has centered on lowering tuition in the University of California system and protecting reproductive rights. She has also supported Governor Newsom’s efforts around gun control.
