Background:
Assemblymember DeMaio was elected in 2024 and is a former San Diego City Councilmember and conservative talk-show host. He is also chairman of Reform California, a political action committee that works to elect more conservative legislators. Notably, Reform California is currently behind an effort to place a measure on the statewide ballot to require photo ID be shown to vote. This measure is widely criticized by social justice organizations as a far-right and racist effort similar to voter ID laws of the Jim Crown South.
Since being elected to the Assembly, DeMaio has been an outspoken opponent of justice reform measures, and earned an “F” on our Legislative Scorecard during his first year in office.
Public Safety Platform:
Assemblymember DeMaio does not have a public safety platform on his campaign website. However, his PAC Reform CA states that one of their priorities is to “Restore Public Safety” by repealing Prop 57, supporting law enforcement, and opposing any reform legislation that lessens prison sentences.
