Background:

Assemblymember Alanis was first elected to the State Assembly in 2022 after a 29 year career in law enforcement with the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department.

Assemblymember Alanis is the Vice Chair of the Assembly Public Safety Committee, where he routinely votes down justice reform issues, often citing his experience as a sheriff to support tough on crime measures. In 2024, he was also a vocal supporter of Prop 36, which created new enhancements for retail theft and brought back felony charges for drug possession, rolling back the progress made by Prop 47 in 2014.

He has earned an “F” on our Legislative Scorecard three years in a row.

Public Safety Platform:

On his campaign website, Assemblymember Alanis describes himself as “A Former Cop to Protect Neighborhoods” and outlines his track record in the Assembly increasing criminal penalties for drug use and shoplifting.
