Background:
Fatima Iqbal-Zubair is an environmental advocate, educator, and immigrant running for Assembly on an overall progressive policy platform. She currently is on staff at CA Environmental Voters and formerly chaired the CA Democratic Party Progressive Caucus.
In 2022 she challenged the incumbent for this same Assembly seat and was endorsed by IJ Action at that time as well.
Public Safety Platform:
In her candidate questionnaire, Iqbal-Zubair stated that she supports a blanket elimination of all sentencing enhancements and mandatory minimums, while also supporting alternatives to incarceration such as diversion and restorative justice.
Specifically, she also voiced her support for restoring the right to vote to people in prison, repealing the Three Strikes Law, and upholding credit earning established under Prop 57, stating: “These programs give people hope, build skills, and allow them to return home better
prepared to contribute to their families and communities. Instead of limiting rehabilitation, we should be expanding access to quality education, mental health care, and re-entry support.”
IJ Action is proud to endorse Fatima Iqbal-Zubair for a second time – she is a strong ally to people impacted by incarceration and has courageously and consistently pushed back against pro-criminalization narratives. We urge voters in AD 65 to vote for Fatima

Public Safety Platform:
Davis centers her public safety platform around creating “safer streets” for young people. A statement from her platform page reads: “I will work closely with local first responders to improve emergency response times… I will also advocate for increased funding for after-school programs and job training programs to provide pathways of opportunity for young people in our communities. Additionally, I will always push for stronger gun safety laws – especially those targeting ghost guns – to keep dangerous weapons out of our schools and off of our streets.”
While her platform includes some preventative approaches, she also outlines a close relationship with law enforcement. She has also been endorsed by the Los Angeles Port Police Association and the Long Beach Police Officers Association, and has received several campaign contributions from law enforcement agencies.

Lyons believes public safety in Los Angeles needs rethinking and investment in community-based solutions. He writes: “California’s approach to public safety has relied too heavily on incarceration and traditional policing, even in cases involving a mental health crisis. I strongly support Los Angeles County’s Care First model, which prioritizes mental health care, homelessness services, and community-based intervention over incarceration.”
He aims to expand mental health crisis response services, invest in community-based organizations that offer public safety and reentry programs, expand public and mental health services, and scale community-based alternatives to policing and incarceration.
