Background:

Assemblymember Schiavo was elected to the State Assembly in 2022, defeating Republican incumbent Suzette Valladares and effectively flipping the district from red to blue. Prior to joining the Assembly, she was a nurse advocate who worked with the California Nurses Association for 13 years, and co-founded an organization that provides meals and resources to houseless people in her community.

Since joining the Legislature, however, she has failed to be a supporter of justice reform issues. She earned an “F” on our Legislative Scorecard in 2023, and a “D” in 2024 and 2025, voting in support of bills that increase criminalization and failing to vote on many good reform bills.

Public Safety Platform:

On her campaign website, Assemblymember Schiavo explains that she “has made community safety a priority by directly engaging with those impacted by crime, bringing essential resources to the district, funding key safety and infrastructure improvements across schools and youth centers, domestic violence and mental health centers, as well as bringing back funding for our local government to invest in police, fire and sheriff resources.”

Assemblymember Schiavo also touts her record of “helping to lead the state effort to address the escalating issue of retail theft by authoring legislation, bringing together key stakeholders from across the community, and serving on the Assembly Select Committee on Retail Theft,” but the bills she has introduced have increased criminalization and enhancements for low level theft charges and people experiencing addiction.

Furthermore, she has increased state spending that expands mass incarceration. She is proud to have been a “strong advocate for fully funding Proposition 36”, the 2024 ballot measure that increased penalties and enhancements for petty retail theft and fentanyl related charges.

Assemblymember Schiavo is endorsed by the Los Angeles Police Protective League and the CA Correctional Peace Officers Association.
