Background:

Senator Alvarado-Gil has served in this Senate seat since 2022. Originally elected as a Democrat, she changed her party to Republican in August 2024. Regardless of her party affiliation, Alvarado-Gil has been hostile to justice reform, earning an “F” on the IJ Action Scorecard all three years that we have evaluated the Legislature. She has furthermore introduced legislation to expand the list of violent felonies.

Furthermore, Senator Alvarado-Gil is also the California Chair of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), the far right-wing organization notorious for drafting model legislation that threatens the rights and safety of people of color across the country, such as the “stand-your-ground” legislation that protected George Zimmerman after he killed Trayvon Martin in 2012.

Public Safety Platform:

On her campaign website, Senator Alvarado-Gil describes herself as a “working  partner and ally to law enforcement, [and] probation.” She is endorsed by multiple county sheriffs and law enforcement agencies.
