- Background:
Malia Cohen has served as California’s State Controller since being elected in 2022. Prior to this role, she was the first Black woman to serve on the CA Board of Equalization, and also sat on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors.
- Public Safety Platform:
While the office of the Controller is a purely financial role and does not deal directly with public safety policy, Cohen has prioritized “Equal Rights for All” on her campaign website. Also, since being in office, she has advocated for increased funding to the CA Victim Compensation Board to support more people impacted by violence. Furthermore, she went on the record as Controller to oppose Prop 36 in 2024, which increased criminal penalties for minor offenses.
Due to her opposition to criminalization measures and the work she has done to try and support survivors of harm, IJ Action recommends that voters re-elect Malia Cohen.
