Background:
Senator Strickland was elected in March 2025 in a special election when the seat was vacated. He was a former State Assemblymember (1998-2004) and Mayor and City Councilmember for Huntington Beach more recently. Since joining the Legislature, Senator Strickland has not been a supporter of justice reform – he earned an “F” on our Legislative Scorecard, voting against all of the bills that we prioritized.
Public Safety Platform:
Senator Strickland does not list a public safety platform on his campaign website, but does state that he went into policy because of “inaction on crime”.
He is endorsed by the California Coalition of Law Enforcement Associations, the California Correctional Peace Officers Association, and the Huntington Beach Police Officers Association, and has received significant campaign contributions from law enforcement. Strickland also lists a quote from the Orange County Sheriff stating, “Tony Strickland has always stood with law enforcement. He understands that public safety must be the top priority, and he’s never wavered in his support for our officers.”

Background:
Chris Duncan was a previous federal prosecutor and mayor. He lists under his accomplishments that he “Enhanced public safety by adding two fire helicopters, deploying police officers in high-risk areas, and establishing social worker outreach teams, leading to a 23% reduction in homelessness.”
Public Safety Platform:
He doesn’t list a public safety policy on his campaign website, but does state he is committed to enforcing tougher gun safety laws and fully funding police and supporting effective homeless solutions.
