Proposition 1 – Housing Bond
IJ Action Recommendation: VOTE YES
Summary
Prop 1 would authorize an $11.25 billion bond to fund affordable housing programs and expand home ownership opportunities. Of these funds, $1.25 billion would go towards funding housing for veterans, and remaining funds would go towards home ownership programs, affordable rentals, tribal housing, and student housing. Overall, the bond is expected to fund up to 40,000 rental units and assist another 40,000 families in purchasing a home.
Supporters Say
Supporters say that California is facing a housing and affordability crisis, with approximately 180,000 unhoused people in our state. Prop 1 is a historic measure that will help house tens of thousands of Californians, focusing on some of the most vulnerable populations. Organizations in support include a broad coalition, such as the CA Democratic Party, ACLU California Action, Drug Policy Alliance, Disability Rights California, and the CA Apartment Association.
Opponents Say
Opponents argue that California can find other ways to fund housing for veterans in the state and should not be borrowing funds. There is not much organized opposition - only a few Republican lawmakers and the far-right PAC Reform CA are officially in opposition.
IJ Action Recommendation
VOTE YES. Housing is a human right and this is a clear step that the state can take to create home ownership opportunities and expand housing affordability programs for some of the groups who need it most. This is only a first step, but an important one, in addressing California’s housing crisis.
