IJ Action Recommended: Yes
California State Senator
Senator Becker was first elected to the California State Senate in 2020. Prior to entering office, Becker was CEO of Lex Machina, a firm that provides analytics to legal professionals.
This year, Senator Becker earned an A on IJ Action’s scorecard. Senator Becker has been a consistent yes vote on criminal justice reform bills, and has authored IJ Action-supported legislation such as SB 1254, extending CalFresh to folks up to 90 days before coming home from prison; SB 1008, which made phone calls free in California prisons and jails; and SB 1133, bringing greater fairness and clarity to the pretrial and bail process.
Senator Becker was also a co-author of ACA 4, an IJ Action cosponsored bill that has been tabled but would have placed an initiative on the ballot to restore voting rights to people in prison. He has also supported voting rights for people on parole by authoring SB 504, which requires CDCR to notify the Secretary of State when a person has been released from prison so that they are notified of their right to register to vote. For all of these reasons, IJ Action recommends that SD 13 voters support Senator Josh Becker.
