Background:

Assemblymember Haney was first elected to the State Assembly in 2022 following a special election. He previously served on the San Francisco School Board and San Francisco County Board of Supervisors.

Since joining the Legislature, Assemblymember Haney has a very strong record on justice reform. In 2023, he was a co-author of ACA 4, an IJ Action cosponsored piece of legislation that failed to pass but would have restored voting rights to people in prison. He also introduced AB 1226, which now requires CDCR place incarcerated parents at the prison closest to their children. Furthermore, he earned an “A” on our Legislative Scorecard in 2023 and 2025 and an “A+” in 2024.

Public Safety Platform:

On his campaign website, Assemblymember Haney outlines his public safety priorities as: “Invest in community policing and recruit from diverse communities so that law enforcement officers come from the communities they serve and possess necessary language skills and cultural literacy; Advocate for criminal justice reform that holds people accountable with effective consequences while investing in rehabilitation, treatment, reentry, and community-based courts; Support reforms that allow us to stop larger organized crime rings that are fueling the spike in retail theft and the deadly fentanyl epidemic; and Help hate crime victims through a state fund for individuals and businesses affected by violence or vandalism.”

Given his general commitment to reform and investing in root causes of harm and his strong voting record, IJ Action recommends that voters re-elect Assemblymember Haney.
