- Background:
Xavier Becerra has a 35-year long history in elected office, serving in the CA Assembly, Congress, as CA’s Attorney General, and as President Biden’s US Secretary of Health and Human Services. Notably as CA Attorney General, he sued the first Trump administration 122 times.
- Public Safety Platform:
Becerra does not have a public safety platform on his campaign website and has not said much publicly about his views on police and prisons. However, his record as CA Attorney General reveals an unwillingness to hold law enforcement accountable. In 2019, he refused to provide police misconduct records to media outlets after the passage of SB 1421, which required him to do so. Additionally as AG, he refused to support measures to standardize the use of police body cameras across the state or to independently review police shootings. The large amounts of campaign contributions that he has received from law enforcement is also concerning.
Despite these facts, IJ Action recommends voting for Becerra as an act of harm reduction, given the extreme tough-on-crime views of his opponent. We believe that he would be a governor more likely to work with community organizations and support reform with enough community pressure.
