Rob Bonta is the current Attorney General, running for reelection after being appointed to the position by the Governor in 2021 and elected for a full term in 2022. As AG, he has sued the Trump administration more than 50 times, fighting to protect critical care funding and suing to stop ICE raids in the state. Furthermore he has fought to protect Californians’ rights to reproductive care and marriage equality.

Prior to becoming the AG, Bonta served as a state Assemblymember for nearly a decade, authoring key pieces of justice reform legislation. There, he led the successful efforts to abolish private prisons and end cash bail in CA, and was also an active co-author of ACA 6, which ultimately restored the right to vote to people on parole under Prop 17.

AG Bonta has committed to continuing his track record of prosecuting exploitative corporations and landlords in order to protect workers and renters. On his campaign website, he also touts his record of addressing organized crime at the source, stating he: “Dismantled organized retail theft rings and took aggressive action to stem the flow of fentanyl – proving that public safety can be achieved through diligent prosecution rather than political theater.”

He has also committed to a continuance of holding a check on federal power as the current administration seeks to strip away California’s funding and human rights. He is firmly committed to doing everything in his power to push back against ICE raids, referring to them as a “dystopian horror” in a press release announcing his reelection campaign.

Given his track record of justice reform and police accountability, IJ Action recommends that voters re-elect Attorney General Bonta.
