RECOMMENDED

Sasha Renée Pérez (D)

Political Party:

Democrat

Ballot Designation:

 Mayor of Alhambra

Law Enforcement Contributions:

California Association of Highway Patrolmen PAC

Background:

Renée Pérez is a current Alhambra City Councilmember and Commissioner for the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority. She was also the statewide Political Director for the Prop 1 campaign, which enshrined reproductive rights into the California Constitution in 2022. She is endorsed by over three dozen local and state politicians and labor unions.

Public Safety Platform:

Renée Pérez’s public safety platform outlines how she “expanded Alhambra’s Homeless Outreach Mental Evaluation (HOME) team, a partnership between Alhambra Police Department, LA County Department of Mental Health and LA Centers for Alcohol and Drug Abuse, which provides a comprehensive response to individuals experiencing mental health crises or alcohol/drug addiction.” She also touts how as Vice Mayor, “Alhambra has not reduced the number of police officers serving the community” and follows up by sharing her work to reduce police response times.

In other settings, Renée Pérez has made statements indicating that she supports addressing the root causes of crime and prevention, namely by successfully adding mental health workers to the city of Alhambra’s public safety team. Renée Pérez has also stated that she supports sentencing reforms on a “case-by-case” basis and is in favor of exploring restorative justice and alternatives to incarceration.

IJ Action recommends Renée Pérez for SD 25 due to her expressed support for justice reform and given the extremist views of her opponent on prison policy.
