Background:

Assemblymember Valencia was elected to the State Assembly in 2022 after working for several years as a legislative staffer for former Democratic Assemblymember Tom Daly. He also served one term on the Anaheim City Council.

Public Safety Platform:

In his first term, Assemblymember Valencia has not been a strong supporter of justice reform. He earned a “D” on the IJ Action Legislative Scorecard last year, voting to support 3 of the bills we prioritized, but failing to vote on AB 93, AB 600, and AB 1310, which would have ended warrantless searches by police, created more opportunities for resentencing, and retroactively given judges more discretion to lessen or remove gun enhancements, respectively.

This year Valencia did not vote for AB 2178 or AB 2709, two bills supported by IJ Action, which would reduce prison capacity and strengthen visitation rights, respectively, thereby earning an “F” on our Legislative Scorecard. Meanwhile he voted for AB 1960 to create new enhancements for property damage.

His campaign website does not outline his views on any policy issues, and he has received campaign contributions from several law enforcement agencies. Because of his harmful voting record and the alarming amount of law enforcement support he has received, IJ Action does not have a recommendation in this race.
