Background:
Assemblymember Rubio was first elected to the State Assembly in 2016, and is an elementary school teacher by training. Prior to running for an Assembly seat, she served two terms on the Baldwin Park Unified School District Board of Education.
Public Safety Platform:
Assemblymember Rubio has a mixed record on criminal justice reform, voting yes on ACA 6 in 2020 and ACA 4 in 2023 to restore voting rights to people on parole and people in prison, respectively. Meanwhile, she did not support important bills like AB 2709 to strengthen visitation rights, nor did she support AB 2178 to reduce prison capacity. She earned an “F” on our Legislative Scorecard in 2023 and only slightly improved her grade to a “D” in 2024.
She does not have a public safety platform on her campaign website, but does have a section highlighting previous criminal justice bills she authored several years ago. Because of her relatively poor voting record on justice reform and her very extensive list of law enforcement campaign contributions, IJ Action does not recommend either candidate in this race.
