Background:
Assemblymember Gabriel was first elected to the State Assembly in 2018 after working for several years as a private attorney. As an attorney, he prosecuted cases protecting DACA recipients and Holocaust survivors. Assemblymember Gabriel co-chairs the California Legislative Jewish Caucus and is a former Board Member of the LA League of Conservation Voters.
Public Safety Platform:
Assemblymember Gabriel is generally supportive of justice reform efforts, but has missed a few key votes, earning him a “C” on the IJ Action Legislative Scorecard both last year and this year. For example, he had also voted to support AB 93 (to end warrantless searches) in a previous Floor vote but was absent for the final Floor vote, which was the vote used in our scorecard. Similarly, he did not vote for AB 2178, a bill supported by IJ Action, which would reduce prison capacity. However, he also did not vote for AB 1990, which IJ Action strongly opposed, which would have authorized physical custody for shoplifting.
In previous years in the Assembly, he has voted to support justice reform legislation such as ACA 6, which ultimately became Prop 17 and restored voting rights to people on parole. However, Assemblymember Gabriel has also accepted campaign contributions from law enforcement and is endorsed by the CA Correctional Peace Officers Association.
Despite his mixed record, Gabriel has shown a willingness to work with criminal justice organizations and has generally supported reform efforts, and thus IJ Action recommends that AD 46 voters re-elect him.

Schroeder’s public safety platform outlines the following: “Violent crime and property crime are on the rise. Sacramento’s soft on crime policies have made us less safe. I strongly oppose ‘Defunding the Police.’ As your Assemblywoman I will work to enact tougher penalties for repeat offenders, to STOP enablement of DA’s disregarding acts of malfeasance, STOP the refusals to prosecute, and STOP letting dangerous felons out of jail early. Let’s START putting the victims first, not coddle the criminals.”
