Background:
Assemblymember Ramos was first elected to the State Assembly in 2018, becoming the first Native American to serve in the legislature. Prior to joining the Legislature, Ramos served on the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors and on the San Bernardino Community College District Board of Trustees. Ramos is also the former Chairman of the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians and currently chairs the Assembly Budget Subcommittee on Public Safety.
Public Safety Platform:
Assemblymember Ramos does not have a public safety platform on his campaign website, but he lists endorsements from six law enforcement agencies and has received campaign contributions from many of the same agencies as well.
Ramos earned an “F” on the IJ Action Legislative Scorecard last year and this year, and failed to vote for good bills like AB 2178 and AB 2709, which would lower prison capacity and strengthen visitation rights respectively. Meanwhile he voted for harmful bills such as AB 1990 and AB 1960.
Furthermore, Ramos has endorsed Proposition 36, a measure that will appear on the November 2024 General Election ballot that would bring back felony charges for drug possession, create new enhancements for retail theft, and gut major components of Proposition 47. It is being led by district attorneys, police and prison associations, and big corporations like Walmart and Home Depot. For these reasons, IJ Action has no recommendation in the AD 45 race.
