Initiate Justice Action

RECOMMENDED

Steve Bennett (D)

Incumbent – Grade B

Political Party:

Democrat

Ballot Designation:

Member of the Assembly 38th District

Law Enforcement Contributions:

CA Association of Highway Patrolmen PAC
CA Correctional Peace Officers Association (CCPOA PAC)

Background:

Assemblymember Bennett was first elected to the State Assembly in 2020. He had retired from politics for several years, after serving on the Ventura City Council and subsequently the Ventura County Board of Supervisors in the 1990s and early 2000s.

Public Safety Platform:

Assemblymember Bennett does not have a written public safety platform, however, he has generally been a supporter of justice reform in the Legislature. For instance, he did not vote for AB 1990, a bill strongly opposed by IJ Action that would have authorized physical custody for petty shoplifting. However, he also did not vote for bills such as AB 1310, supported by IJ Action, which would have retroactively given judges more discretion to lessen or remove gun enhancements.

Assemblymember Bennett earned a B in our Legislative Scorecard in 2023 and in 2024. Due to his consistently decent voting record, IJ Action recommends voters re-elect Assemblymember Bennett.
