Background:

Assemblymember Soria was first elected in 2022 on a platform of criminal justice reform, but since she has been in the Assembly she has failed to support any meaningful reform measures. She was a Fresno City Council Member for seven years prior to running for Assembly, and was a White House intern under former President Obama.

Public Safety Platform:

On her campaign website, Assemblymember Soria expresses tough-on-crime views, stating “I’m sick of politicians failing to keep us safe. I invested $2 billion in police, fire protection, and emergency response – but my opponent let sex offenders and criminals go free on our streets. That’s wrong.”

Assemblymember Soria also authored multiple criminalization bills this session, including AB 1960 to re-establish harsh enhancements for property damage. She has also failed to support justice reform legislation, earning an “F” on the IJ Action Legislative Scorecard both this year and last year, opposing nearly all of the good bills we prioritized.

She has received campaign contributions from several law enforcement agencies and is endorsed by the California Association of Highway Patrolmen, California Police Chiefs Association, California Statewide Law Enforcement Association, Fresno Deputy Sheriff’s Association, and the Fresno Police Officers Association. Because neither candidate in this race has expressed support for justice reform measures, and because of Assemblymember Soria’s poor voting record, IJ Action does not recommend either candidate in this race.
