Assembly District 22

1 RECOMMENDATION

Political Party:

Democrat

Ballot Designation:

 Child Advocate / Businesswoman

Law Enforcement Contributions:

None as of 8/23/24

Background:

Self is an attorney and former public defender with the Stanislaus County Public Defender’s Office. She ran unsuccessfully for AD 22 in 2022.

Public Safety Platform:

Self’s public safety platform outlines the following: “Jessica works every day to fight for Valley children who need safe, stable communities and a place to learn and grow. She will stand up for safety in and around our schools and protect our neighborhoods.” In interviews during her 2022 race Self said she was opposed to returning to tough-on-crime laws. She said she supported Prop 47 and criticized Stanislaus County for not implementing more programs to help community reintegration for impacted families.

Despite the little information available about her public safety positions, IJ Action recommends AD 22 voters support Self given the incumbent’s record of opposing criminal justice reform.

Background:

Assemblymember Alanis was first elected to the State Assembly in 2022 after a 29 year career in law enforcement with the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department. He ran unsuccessfully for Sheriff in 2017.

Public Safety Platform:

Assemblymember Alanis sits on the Assembly Public Safety Committee, where he routinely votes down justice reform issues, often citing his experience as a sheriff to support tough on crime measures. He was a co-author of ACA 12 (Alexandra’s Law), a dangerous piece of legislation which would allow the courts to charge people who deal fentanyl with manslaughter in the case of overdose. He earned an “F” on the IJ Action Legislative Scorecard in 2023 and a “D” in 2024.

Additionally, Assemblymember Alanis has endorsed Proposition 36, a measure that will appear on the November 2024 General Election ballot that would bring back felony charges for drug possession, create new enhancements for retail theft, and gut major components of Proposition 47. It is being led by district attorneys, police and prison associations, and big corporations like Walmart and Home Depot.
