Background:

Assemblymember Nguyen was first elected to the State Assembly in 2022 after serving on the Elk Grove City Council for five years. Prior to that she worked as Executive Director for Asian Resources Inc., a Sacramento-based nonprofit supporting Asian Americans and immigrants.

Public Safety Platform:

Assemblymember Nguyen’s campaign website uplifts her support for law enforcement and peddles misinformation about crime in California, stating: “As the wife of a police officer and member of the Sheriff’s community advisory board, Stephanie knows first-hand the importance of keeping our neighborhoods safe. She knows that crime is on the rise, including serious and violent assaults, rampant retail theft and gang violence…There is a reason Stephanie has earned all the support of our local frontline peace officers and over 50,000 law enforcement officers statewide.” Her site also lists endorsements from several law enforcement agencies as well as Crime Victims United, which is known for opposing justice reform legislation.

Furthermore, Assemblymember Nguyen has a very poor voting record on justice reform, earning an “D” on the IJ Action Legislative Scorecard this year, only slightly better than the “F” she earned last year. She also has authored or co-authored several pieces of legislation that IJ Action has opposed, such as AB 32, which failed to pass but would have made all hate crimes violent felonies; AB 2576, which failed but would have prevented people charged with attempted murder from having access to diversion services; and AB 1990, which failed but would have allowed for arrests for shoplifting.

Nguyen has endorsed Proposition 36, a measure that will appear on the November 2024 General Election ballot that would bring back felony charges for drug possession, create new enhancements for retail theft, and gut major components of Proposition 47. It is being led by district attorneys, police and prison associations, and big corporations like Walmart and Home Depot.

“I am proud to support Proposition 36. This initiative is crucial for addressing the daily persistent issues that our communities and small businesses face in rising crime and severe drug use. This measure offers a balanced solution to these pressing problems by holding repeat offenders accountable and promoting rehabilitation to help Californians through a compassionate approach,” Nguyen said in a statement endorsing it.

Because of her poor voting record and strong support for law enforcement, IJ Action has no recommendation in the AD 10 race.
