Background:

Assemblymember Schultz was first elected to the Legislature in 2024, after serving as City Councilmember and Mayor of Burbank. He is also a former Deputy Attorney General within the Special Prosecutions Section focused on tax evasion, mortgage fraud, officer-involved shootings, and public corruption cases.

In his first year in office, Assemblymember Schultz was appointed as Chair of the Public Safety Committee and has wielded his power there to advance justice reform legislation while preventing many pieces of criminalization legislation from advancing. In this role, he is also a vocal supporter of reforms and has centered the experiences of people impacted by incarceration.

Furthermore, Assemblymember Schultz has had a very good voting record as well, earning an “A” on our Legislative Scorecard in his first term in office.

Public Safety Platform:

On his campaign website, Assemblymember Schultz identifies “Criminal Justice Reform” as a policy priority, promising to continue to “increase safety and address the inequities at the root causes of crime through his leadership of the Assembly Public Safety Committee and a membership of the Budget Committee.”

Key reform legislation he has authored includes: AB 321, which authorizes a court to reduce a felony to a misdemeanor where the charged offense is an alternate felony-misdemeanor when a court determines, prior to trial, either on its own motion or a motion by a party; AB 2582, which would require courts to offer a diversion program for first or second charges for receiving compensation for sex work; AB 1905: which would prohibit a law enforcement officer from seeking statements or information while working undercover from a person who was 17 years of age or younger during the commission of crime and who is in custody; and AB 1036, which authorized access to post-conviction discovery materials for felonies resulting in a sentence of incarceration in state prison.

One matter of concern is the strong financial support that he has received from law enforcement groups. However, his commitment to justice reform, progressive leadership as Chair of the Public Safety Committee, and strong voting record overall lead IJ Action to recommend voters re-elect Assemblymember Schultz.

Carolyn Daniels works as an independent contractor who also founded an organization called “Safe Places for Abused Women and Children.”

Public Safety Platform:

On her campaign website, Daniels states, “Homeless are still on the streets, ‘housing first’ doesn’t work, and crime is still plaguing our neighborhoods and local businesses, despite billions spent over a decade by Sacramento.” Her public safety stance involves “support Prop. 36 reforms, back police, and put victims first—not criminals.” In terms of addressing houselessness, she says she wants to “prioritize mental treatment and incarcerate drug offenders” and “enforce anti-camping laws.”
