- Background:
Josh Newman is an Army Veteran who was first elected to the State Senate in 2016, after spending his career working on Veterans’ issues and running a non-profit serving the community. He was successfully recalled by voters in 2018 and replaced by his 2016 Republican opponent. In 2020 he ran and defeated the same opponent, but lost to Republican Steven Choi in 2024.
In the Senate, Newman had a mixed voting record on justice reform, earning a “B” on our Legislative Scorecard in 2023 but a “D” in 2024. Notably in 2024, he also supported Prop 36, a very harmful ballot measure that increased criminal penalties for minor offenses

His campaign website does not list any public safety policy priorities, however, it is worth noting that he is endorsed by the California Correctional Peace Officers Association and the Association for Los Angeles Deputy Sheriffs. His educational policy priorities include literacy and numeracy, workforce readiness, college readiness, and civic readiness.
