Katie Porter served as a member of Congress from 2018-2024, stepping down to run for the US Senate. Having lost that election, she returned to her role as a professor at the UC Irvine School of Law.
- Public Safety Platform:
Although Porter does not express her views on public safety on her campaign website, she has made several relevant public comments on justice reform. In 2024, she revealed that she supported Prop 36 (a ballot measure opposed by IJ Action that increased criminal penalties for minor offenses), stating: “I support the increased penalties for retail crimes, that’s a problem here. We need to give more tools to our police officers, to our businesses to deal with that.”
In a March 2026 interview with ABC Sacramento, she voiced support for some of the reforms that California has been making, specifically naming the Three Strikes Law as harmful. However, in the same interview, she doubled down on her support for Prop 36, stating: “We’ve passed Prop 36, that’s focused on punishment. We need punishment, but we really need to dig in on prevention and making our streets feel safe.”
