Background:

Senator Newman is an Army Veteran who was first elected to the State Senate in 2016, after spending his career working on Veterans’ issues and running a non-profit serving the community. He was successfully recalled by voters in 2018 and replaced by his 2016 Republican opponent. In 2020 he ran and defeated the same opponent.

Public Safety Platform:

Senator Newman does not have a written public safety platform, but this cycle in particular has shifted right on criminal justice issues. He earned a “D” on IJ Action’s Scorecard this year, failing to vote on 4 priority bills. His score dropped significantly from last year, when he had earned a “B.” Newman has also received campaign contributions from ten law enforcement agencies from across the state, which calls into question his commitment to justice reform versus his loyalty to the police. He is endorsed by over a half dozen law enforcement associations, including the Los Angeles Police Protective League, California Police Chiefs, and California Correctional Peace Officers Association.

Background:

Choi is a former Assemblymember representing the 68th District, where he served for six years. Prior to that, Choi was both an Irvine City Councilmember and Mayor, and also served on the Irvine Unified School District Board. He is also the founder of Dr. Choi’s Academy, which provides math and reading centers and tutoring for K-12 students.

Public Safety Platform:

Choi does not have a written public safety platform, but while serving in the Assembly, he consistently voted against criminal justice reforms such as the Racial Justice Act and restoring voting rights to people on parole (ACA 6). Choi also opposed bills to stop judges from denying post-conviction record relief for people with unpaid restitution fees and opposed legislation to expand mental health services for people in prison.
