Background:

Assemblymember Ta was first elected to the State Assembly in 2022. Prior to that he served on the Westminster City Council for many years and also as Mayor.

Public Safety Platform:

In his first term in office, Assemblymember Ta has opposed all progressive criminal justice reform bills this cycle, earning an “F” on the IJ Action Legislative Scorecard both years.

His campaign website states the following on public safety: “We’ve all seen the news. Smash and grabs happening every day. Violent crimes occurring in our neighborhoods. Police units stretched thin due to Defund the Police budget cuts. We’ve got to end the madness and support our law enforcement officers. First, I support ending policies that allow dangerous criminals to be let out of jail early or to not be prosecuted at all. Second, I support fully funding police departments to boost safety and crime deterrence. Third, I will support law enforcement efforts to enforce our immigration laws and I will oppose Sanctuary Cities.”

Ta has endorsed Proposition 36, a measure that will appear on the November 2024 General Election ballot that would bring back felony charges for drug possession, create new enhancements for retail theft, and gut major components of Proposition 47. It is being led by district attorneys, police and prison associations, and big corporations like Walmart and Home Depot.

Public Safety Platform:

Pham’s public safety platform outlines the following: “Recognizing the concerns about rising crime rates, Jimmy stands firmly in support of law enforcement and first responders. He rejects calls to defund the police and instead advocates for better training, hiring practices, and accountability measures. By ensuring that our guardians are the best our nation has to offer, Jimmy aims to create a safer California, where the rule of law is upheld with unwavering dedication.” Because neither candidate in this race has outlined support for justice reform ad both have touted harmful rhetoric regarding public safety, IJ Action does not have a recommendation in the AD 70 race.
