Background:

 Assemblymember Chen was first elected to the State Assembly in 2016, after serving on the Walnut Valley Unified School Board for five years. He is also a former Los Angeles County Reserve Sheriff’s Deputy and appointee of former Governor Pete Wilson to the Governor’s Office of Criminal Justice Planning.

Public Safety Platform:

Assemblymember Chen has voted against nearly all major criminal justice reform measures we prioritized last year and this year, earning an “F” on the IJ Action Legislative Scorecard. He is strongly supported by law enforcement.

Additionally, Assemblymember Chen has endorsed Proposition 36, a measure that will appear on the November 2024 General Election ballot that would bring back felony charges for drug possession, create new enhancements for retail theft, and gut major components of Proposition 47. It is being led by district attorneys, police and prison associations, and big corporations like Walmart and Home Depot. Because of Assemblymember Chen’s tough-on-crime positions and the fact that little to no information is available on his opponent, IJ Action has no recommendation in this race.
