Background:

Assemblymember Irwin was first elected to the State Assembly in 2014 after serving three terms on the Thousand Oaks City Council and two terms as Mayor. Prior to entering politics Irwin worked for the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab as a systems engineer, and also worked at Teledyne

Public Safety Platform:

Assemblymember Irwin supports tough on crime policies and is openly pro-police. Her website highlights how she “…secured over $13 million in funding for local law enforcement to remove guns from violent felons who are prohibited from possessing firearms” and “passed a law to make it easier to prosecute ‘smash-and-grab’ Organized Retail Theft that crosses city and county lines.”

Assemblymember Irwin earned an “F” on the IJ Action Legislative Scorecard last year, and only slightly improved her grade to a “D” this year. She did not vote for important bills like AB 2709, which strengthens visitation rights, while voting for bills like AB 1990 and AB 1960 which were strongly opposed by IJ Action.

Her campaign website lists endorsements from 16 law enforcement agencies and current and former elected sheriffs and district attorneys. She has also received significant campaign contributions from law enforcement. Because both candidates in this race support tough on crime, IJ Action does not recommend either candidate in the AD 42 race.

Nordblum is a business owner who runs a medical device company.

Public Safety Platform:

Nordblum’s public safety platform outlines the following: “Californians no longer feel safe in their communities. Communities and families are being torn apart by crime and drug addiction. This issue means a lot to Ted personally, as he lost his brother to a fentanyl overdose in 2021. We must FUND the police, keep violent criminals out of our communities, and support public-private partnerships for drug rehabilitation and mental health programs.”
