Assembly District 31

RECOMMENDED

Joaquin Arambula (D)

Incumbent – Grade A

Political Party:

Democrat

Ballot Designation:

 Doctor / Assemblymember

Law Enforcement Contributions: California Correctional Peace Officers Association (CCPOA PAC)

Background:

Assemblymember Arambula was first elected to the State Assembly in 2016 in a special election. Prior to running for office, he was an emergency room doctor in Selma, California.

Public Safety Platform:

Assemblymember Arambula has a mixed record on public safety issues. He failed to vote on AB 600 and AB 1310 which would  have retroactively given judges more discretion to lessen or remove gun enhancements, respectively. However, he markedly improved his voting record this year, supporting all the good bills IJ Action prioritized and not voting for AB 1960, which we strongly opposed. Arambula earned an “A” on IJ Action’s 2024 Scorecard. Arambula also did not vote for AB 1990, a bill strongly opposed by IJ Action which would have authorized physical custody for shoplifting.

Given his significant improvements on criminal justice issues, IJ Action recommends AD31 voters support his re-election campaign.

He understands the importance of supporting law enforcement and taking homelessness head-on by allocating resources strategically and addressing root causes like addiction and mental health.”
