Background:

Assemblymember Gallagher was first elected to the State Assembly in 2014, after serving on the Sutter County Board of Supervisors for six years. He is also a former staffer for then Assemblyman (now Republican Congressman) Doug LaMalfa. Gallagher is currently Minority Leader for the GOP.

Public Safety Platform:

This cycle Gallagher has voted against every bill to reduce lengthy sentences and bring our incarcerated loved ones home, earning an “F” on the IJ Action Legislative Scorecard. He has historically been an outspoken opponent of justice reform in the Assembly, and voted against ACA 6 to restore voting rights to people on parole in 2020.

On his campaign website, his public safety platform outlines the following: “Focus on ensuring that dangerous people are kept in prison and out of our communities and support our law enforcement.”

Gallagher has endorsed Proposition 36, a measure that will appear on the November 2024 General Election ballot that would bring back felony charges for drug possession, create new enhancements for retail theft, and gut major components of Proposition 47. It is being led by district attorneys, police and prison associations, and big corporations like Walmart and Home Depot.
