Initiate Justice Action

RECOMMENDED

David E. Lee (D)

Political Party:

Democrat

Ballot Designation:

 Educator

Law Enforcement Contributions:

None as of 8/23/24

Background:

Lee is director of the Asian Pacific American Student Success Program at Laney College in Oakland. He is a former 3-time candidate for San Francisco Board of Supervisors, and a long-time activist in the Chinese community.

Public Safety Platform:

Lee has extensive experience working with formerly incarcerated people, including youth, as an educator, touting how the Laney College Asian Pacific American Student Success Program “…supports immigrant, undocumented, and formerly incarcerated students with academic counseling, mental health support services, peer mentoring, and multilingual support.”

His public safety platform outlines supporting small businesses that have faced theft, and expanding “…local law enforcement’s capacity to provide in-language services and effectively serve the community.” He goes on to discuss how he “…supports expanding anti-recidivism programs to more folks who have been incarcerated, as well as boosting community organizations that are providing services to justice-involved youth through job training and social programs.”

Lee participated in IJ Action’s endorsement process and emphasized his experience with impacted students and commitment to restorative justice work; however, IJ Action ultimately chose not to endorse him as he wasn’t fully aligned with our positions on enhancements and the Three Strikes Law. Nevertheless, Lee earned the recommendation in his race because of his opponent’s record opposing criminal justice reforms and leading the recall of progressive San Francisco District Attorney Chese Boudin.

Background:

Stefani is a current member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, and was first elected to that position in 2018. Prior to being elected to the Board, Stefani was a San Francisco County Clerk and also worked as Chief of Staff for former members of the Board of Supervisors. Stefani also worked for several years as a prosecutor in Contra Costa.

Public Safety Platform:

Stefani is known as a fiercely tough-on-crime and pro-law enforcement incumbent on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. She was the first elected official to endorse the recall of progressive former District Attorney Chesa Boudin, and headed a successful local ballot measure that established a separate city agency to assist “crime victims and witnesses.”

Stefani’s campaign website states: “As a former prosecutor, national gun violence prevention advocate, and County Supervisor, Catherine increased police staffing, cracked down on car break-ins, and passed comprehensive gun safety laws,” and that in the Assembly she will be “determined to combat the pervasive issue of open-air drug dealing on our streets and will push for mandatory minimum sentences for fentanyl dealers…she will continue to work with federal and local partners to cut off the supply of deadly drugs on our streets.”She has also indicated opposition to reducing gun enhancements, only supports capping enhancements on a case-by-case basis, and only supports reform of the Three Strikes Law in limited circumstances.

She is endorsed by the San Francisco Deputy Sheriffs’ Association, the San Francisco Police Officers Association, San Mateo Sheriff Christina Corpus, and San Francisco Sheriff Paul M. Miyamoto.
