Andy Lopez

Andy is a dedicated advocate, researcher, and survivor of the prison-industrial complex, whose lived experience informs a deep commitment to systemic change. Having spent the majority of his adult life impacted by incarceration, Andy has transformed his journey into a public mission—working to dismantle structures of harm and uplift communities most affected by injustice. Born and raised in New York, he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary Studies from San Diego State University, with concentrations in Communication, Criminal Justice, and Sociology.

Andy currently supports system-impacted youth as a proctor at East Mesa Juvenile Detention Facility and has contributed to academic research as a former research assistant with the Project on Sanitation Justice. In Fall 2025, he will begin SDSU’s Master of Public Administration (MPA) program to expand his impact in the policy arena further. As a first-generation Afro-Caribbean Dominican American, Andy brings a powerful lens shaped by cultural pride, community resilience, and a lifelong pursuit of abolitionist values. His leadership centers dignity, collective healing, and bold solutions to transform public systems from the ground up.
