Akilah Weber (D)

*Current Assemblymember – Grade A

Political Party:

Democrat

Ballot Designation:

 Assemblymember / Medical Doctor

Law Enforcement Contributions:

None as of 8/23/24

Background:

Assemblymember Akilah Weber is currently in the state Assembly. Prior to joining the Assembly in 2021, she served on the La Mesa City Council and is a medical doctor by profession.

Public Safety Platform:

Assemblymember Weber was a co-author of ACA 4, an IJ Action cosponsored piece of legislation that stalled but would have placed an initiative on the November 2024 ballot to restore voting rights to people in prison. Assemblymember Weber has consistently voted in favor of progressive justice reforms, earning an “A” on the IJ Action Legislative Scorecard. Assemblymember Weber also stood with community organizations in not voting for AB 1990, which would have authorized physical custody for shoplifting.

In previous years, Assemblymember Weber has also demonstrated a record of supporting justice reform. Last legislative cycle, she introduced AB 2598, a bill to create best practices for restorative justice for the California Department of Education K-12 system. Also, while serving on the La Mesa City Council, she helped create a Community Police Oversight Board and the La Mesa homelessness task force. For these reasons, IJ Action recommends a vote for Akilah Weber for Senate.
