HARM REDUCTION

Jerry McNerney (D)

Political Party:

Democrat

Ballot Designation:

 Policy Advisor

Law Enforcement Contributions:

None as of 8/23/24

Background:

McNerney is a former member of U.S. Congress, serving in that role from 2008 until 2022, after a career as a businessman and investor.

Public Safety Platform:

McNerney does not have a written public safety platform, and while in Congress had a mixed voting record on criminal justice issues. His State Senate platform focuses on issues of affordability, water infrastructure, and green jobs. While in Congress, McNerney opposed bills that would have granted federal immigration authorities the ability to deport people based on unsubstantiated gang allegations, and other bills that would have expanded penalties for nonviolent offenses. However, he also supported legislation that strengthened law enforcement as a protected class, hence his mixed record. Given that his opponent is strongly pro-law enforcement and supports prison expansion, IJ Action is encouraging SD 5 residents to vote for McNerney as a form of harm reduction.

Shoemaker is a conservative activist and former candidate who previously ran unsuccessfully for the U.S. Congress for California’s 9th District.

Public Safety Platform:

Shoemaker’s public safety platform outlines a return to “law and order” and ending what he believes is the “prioritizing [of] criminals over business owners.” Therein, Shoemaker states his belief that property crime has escalated since the passage of Proposition 47, and that he will “…advocate for stricter penalties for violent criminals while ensuring the men and women who protect our streets have the support they deserve.”
